Like many, I do not understand why the elderly are not valued and respected in this country as a whole. Aging to many means a loss of control and deterioration. Seniors are seen by some as a burden to their families because they can live into their late 80’s & 90’s or even longer and can no longer take care of themselves. Some end up in nursing homes in which most of us can agree, because of the lack of staff and the low wages many residents are not taken care of in the manner they deserve.
American Culture believes that each individual is responsible for his or her life and what you have made of it. Most Americans believe that older adults are responsible for his or her current health conditions, circumstances and financial status. In other words many believe that older adults would not suffer illness, financial worries, or disability if they had taken care of themselves in their younger years.
The U.S. population of 65 and older grew five times faster than the total population from 1920 to 2020 (100 years) according to the 2020 Census.
Older Americans (Seniors) need to be recognized for the many contributions they make to our communities and our society. They provide care and resources across generations in many ways. They do housework, home maintenance, yard work- not just for themselves but for others as well. They run errands, babysit for their grandchildren and other family if needed. They Cook meals for their family or neighbors when one is sick and cannot cook for themselves. They provide transportation if needed. They give emotional support, advice, and offer friendship to others that are ill or housebound and make sure all is well and maybe stay for a little chat. Some serve food and help cook at homeless shelters, tutor, and help children with their homework. Some volunteer in hospitals as well.
As a society we should take care of the elderly and here are some reasons I feel are important to think about:
* They are family* They need to feel they are still useful* They need to feel loved and a sense of belonging* They have made sacrifices for many* They give you an insight of what they value*They get sick easier and sometimes very quickly* They can teach many lessons in life that may be valuable to you* They know their time left on this earth is very precious* They carry on family traditions* And last but not least, they are human and need comfort and love
The whole month of May, 2024 is OLDER AMERICANS MONTH Let us celebrate that month in recognition of all Seniors!
